If you don't mind missing the excitement of stumbling around Mass Effect 1 not knowing what's coming next, then I'd recommend picking up the guide as well. Jim had never played it more than 5 minutes before, and with the guide he was able to get through the entire thing (with side quests) in 8 hours. Thanks Jeff!
